FLORENCE - A Holocaust Remembrance service will be held Tuesday night at 7 pm, at Beth Israel, 316 Park Avenue, Florence.
According to a news release, the Yom HaShoah program will remembering those who perished in the Holocaust. The memorial service will not only include the memories of the millions of Jews murdered, but will also remember those of other persecuted groups.
Representation from the gay community, European community, the disabled, the religious community, and Freemasons will join in the service.
The public is invited and encouraged to attend and remember.
Monday night, more than 90 families were expected to light yellow candles to observe Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day.
The candles were distributed by Beth Israel Congregation’s Brotherhood as part of a program sponsored by Conservative and Reform synagogues through the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs.
Families who received candles through the program lit them in their homes as part of an effort to increase awareness of the Holocaust and perpetuate the memory of the six million Jews who were lost during those years, the release said.
“The memory is important because Holocaust survivors are dwindling in number,” said Matt Reich, Brotherhood president. “They are passing on and taking our first-person link with history. And as we lose this precious link, those who deny that the Holocaust ever happened are poised to revise history. Sadly, 20% of all high school students lack any knowledge of the Holocaust. They are ripe for the revisionist history we wish to avoid. The Yom HaShoah Yellow Candle is a highly visible symbol of what really happened, and we hope the flame will inspire toleration of those who are different from ourselves.”
Beth Israel’s Brotherhood will distribute Yom HaShoah Yellow Candles to the entire congregation and congregational friends to insure that the messages of freedom and tolerance continue to shine.
