FLORENCE — The Pee Dee State Farmer’s Market dedicated a building in honor of state Sen. Hugh Leatherman of Florence on Friday afternoon.
And along with the new building at the market, farmers there said they’re seeing more people purchasing all they need to plant their very own garden.
“Well with times getting like now, we’re gonna have to do something,” said Annie Grace Miller, a visitor to the weekend’s 25th annual spring Southern Plant and Flower Festival at the market.
“You’re limited to what you can buy. You can’t buy like you used to,” she said. “You know we eat anything we want, but now we have to limit it.”
Tomatoes, plants and other vegetables are all things Lennie Mize, who has a booth at the market, is selling more of now then ever.
“We’re seeing a lot of people coming and wanting transplants. They want information on how to raise vegetables for their family,” Mize said.
Mize said home gardening is a trend that’s come back from the past.
“In Vietnam, the front part of the yard is used for flowers, the back part of the yard is used for vegetables to support the family,” Mize said. “We’re seeing more of that now where people are putting vegetable plants in with their flower beds.”
Mize said an average tomato plant can provide 10 to 15 pounds of tomatoes and one eggplant can feed a family of five in one meal.
