It's hard to believe, but it's nearly tax day, again. If you're working late on your own taxes, you could possibly finish them in time. If you plan on working with a CPA, you’ll most likely need to file an extension.
According to the IRS website, http://www.irs.gov , the IRS expects to receive a total of almost 10 million extension requests in 2009. The extension gives taxpayers until October 15 to file the tax return. However, you still need to pay, even with an extension.
Rad Lowery, a CPA in Myrtle Beach said, "If you haven't gotten an extension, then at least extend your return.” said Lowery. “Payments are due as of the extension date, even if you owe money later on when you file a return, when you extend it, it doesn't extend the time to pay, it extends the time to file."
The IRS commented this week saying they will work with taxpayers this year. If you can't pay you need to either send a partial payment or even if you send no money, you still need to file. Then, you'll want to call the IRS right away and set up payment arrangements.
For the fastest filing, file electronically and sign up for direct deposit. Local post offices said they will operate under regular business hours. So don't count on filing late April 15.
