Cynthia Binder spent this tax season minding the intersection of Glenns Bay Road and the Highway 17 Bypass near the office of Liberty Tax Service--dressed head-to-toe as the State of Liberty.
Upon closer inspection, you'll realize that Cynthia is wearing ear buds to keep herself occupied during the long, sometimes-hot-sometimes-cold days spent waving and smiling at passersby.
"You have to pay attention to all the cars," she said. "I've gotten the finger, the wave, the hand gestures. I wouldn't sit out here for minimum wage, though."
In fact, this year, she makes about $9.75 an hour.
"It's better than digging a ditch, or working on a roof," she said.
Cynthia is ready for the long days, with a cooler full of ice water, and backpack with the essentials; hand cream, suntan lotion, keys, her wallet, and cigarettes.
"All I have to do is maintain my certain amount of exposure," she said, meaning she can't get upset when people yell at her or give her the finger.
Plus--she does get some recognition, like when children come up out of their cars to get a picture taken with her.
"I've had a few people say, 'I recognize you from somewhere,'" she said. She then put on her Statue of Liberty smile, and waves, and said, "They're like, 'oh yeah you do that Liberty Tax Lady, down by Glenns Bay Road,' and I'm like that's me!"
