Pelicans offer fun on a budget

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The struggling economy has many people looking for bargains wherever they can.

The general manager of one local business says they have the best bargain for your buck. You get to be outside, there's food and entertainment, then throw in some athletics and you've got yourself a ball game.

Dave Saunders says he buys Myrtle Beach Pelicans tickets mainly to see the games, but the value is what keeps him coming back, year after year.

"The entertainment between the innings, they keep you entertained and it's a fun evening, my granddaughter likes to come here more than she does to go to a professional game. I worked for the Cincinnati reds for three years and their tickers are three times, four times that much and so uh it's a real deal.” Saunders said.

General Manager North Johnson says with 7 to 11 dollar ticket prices, new meal deals and reasonably priced souvenirs, value is part of the Pelicans game plan. "We've really been conscious about everything we've done this year in terms of pricing so we can maintain the consistency that we've become known for with our entertainment, but also give the fans as mush value as we possibly can.”

Johnson says while some season tickets holders won't be returning and there aren’t as many billboards as last year, the experience will not change.

"Really for three and a half, fours hours, you can get entertained for seven or eight dollars, you know the movies are more than that, the attractions are more than that, the miniature golf is more than that, so again, we're really proud of our product and the pricing point we're able to offer our fans."

Saunders says he'll continue to be a fan not just for the prices, but also the chance to say he saw some minor league players, before they made it big.

Johnson adds, while the Pelicans have not seen a decrease in staff numbers, they are being smarter about how they go about their business when it comes to spending money.

The Pelicans open their season Thursday, p.m., 7:05 against the Wilmington Blue Rocks at BB&T Coastal Field. For tickets call (843) 918-6000.
