FLORENCE — U.S. Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina presented $500,000 of congressionally-directed funding through NASA to ScienceSouth in Florence on Thursday.
Clyburn lauded the efforts of ScienceSouth “to supplement the educational pursuits of young people.”
He said President Obama’s administration is focused on promoting science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and ScienceSouth’s programs fit perfectly into that mission.
“... we have used the creativity of local communities to find the resources at the federal level to help these creative ideas get their footing,” Clyburn said.
“He attended the groundbreaking and now he gets to see the finished product,” Dick Powell, executive director of ScienceSouth, said of Clyburn in a press release.
“The congressman and all of our elected government representatives have been great supporters of ScienceSouth from its earliest days. In these economic times, these funds are very timely for the continued growth of ScienceSouth,” Powell said. “We look forward to continuing to deliver high-quality hands-on science programs to the children, youth, and teachers of the Pee Dee region. Plus, extending our outreach to several more school districts along the I-95 corridor is part of our strategic plan.”
ScienceSouth’s mission is to advance scientific understanding and increase the competitiveness of future generations. ScienceSouth’s mobile lab programs are part of the curriculum in eight school districts across the Pee Dee.
Also, every first Friday of the month is Homeschool Friday at ScienceSouth.
The ScienceSouth Pavilion at Freedom Florence is open on Saturdays for hands-on family workshops as well as birthday parties.
