Regardless of the state of the economy, there are some things people just can't seem to do without, including candy.
Todd Canipes, owner of Canipes Candy in Myrtle Beach said when the economy is struggling, there are still must have items, like alcohol, cigarettes, and candy. "Even with competition like Wal-Mart and all those, the people want something that's made good and they know its been made in a store and that's what we do."
Susan Wall said stores like Canipes Candy are a big draw for her, because no matter how she's feeling about what's going on in the world, candy makes it all better. "It gives you those feel good comfort zone feeling so, yes, I’m here to buy chocolate."
Jim King said despite his skepticism about the economy, you have to have some fun in your life and a piece of chocolate a day won't hurt anything. "Have a happy balance in you life and a piece of chocolate is something you can certainly afford." King said.
Affordability is one reason Canipes said people come to his stores in Myrtle Beach because they can enjoy themselves on a reasonable budget. He said reasonable and candy go hand in hand and he's trying to keep it that way.
"We tried to keep from raising prices and we have not in over a year, but we're trying to hang on as long as we can without doing that."
Canipes noted there was a decline in sales after the stock market crash of the 80's and the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. But the Myrtle Beach area quickly recovered because he said most people still take their vacations.
