Web site encourages students, businesses to connect

»  Comments | Post a Comment

A Web site that helps students, adults and educators discover learning and career opportunities from employers launched recently, and businesses in the Pee Dee are encouraged to join.

Connect2Business provides a central location for local businesses to post job listings, as well as job shadowing, internships and other extended learning opportunities that are invaluable to students and school career specialists for free.

The site was developed by the state Department of Education via the company, Kuder, as a result of the Education and Economic Development Act, said Cheryl Lewis, coordinator of the Pee Dee Regional Education Center.

Connect2Business can be accessed through the South Carolina Personal Pathways to Success Web site, www.scpathways.org/EEDA3/businesses.aspx.

There are several reasons why businesses should register at the Web site, including the opportunity to promote their company and connect to future employees, Lewis said.

Employers can improve recruiting efforts by matching opportunities to adults with the right interests, skills and work values.

The Web site also helps students and adults make a connection between classroom learning and the real world.

“We’re trying to find a way to get more business involved so that they are partnering with local school districts in providing these opportunities for our kids,” Lewis said. “We’re trying to get kids to see what’s out there in our businesses and industries.”

Lewis said the Web site will help in the state’s effort to combat the skilled work force shortage by providing a variety of tools, including career assessments and other resources.

To learn more about the Web site, local business leaders and educators can attend local informational meetings or visit the Web site.

About 70 business leaders and educators attended a session Monday at the Southeastern Institute of Manufacturing and Technology where participants were able to register for the site and begin connecting to career specialists or potential employees in the area.

The next Connect2Business informational session will be from noon to 2 p.m. April 20 at the Mayflower Seafood Restaurant, 309 Chesterfield Highway, Cheraw.

For more information on the Web site or to RSVP for the session, contact Lewis at (843) 661-8277 or clewis@scpathways.org.
