It's probably safe to say almost everybody knows somebody that is out of work and wondering where they can turn for a new job.
But with so many shrinking industries, getting back into the same career may not be an option. In this job climate, home-based businesses are experiencing a new interest level. If you have considered starting a business, a little planning is key to success.
There are many different things you can do from home. Before you start, decide if you want to work online or not and do you like working alone or with other people
Then determine your skill set, do you know what you need to start or do you need training? Ask yourself your risk tolerance and how much money and time are you willing to invest? Ben Pittman of PittmanWorld.com is a home-based business consultant. “Find something that you really enjoy and be willing to put a lot of time and effort into learning how to be successful at doing whatever it is your going to promote and sell because your going to have to market yourself and your skills in you home-based business,” said Pittman.
Pittman says you must create a business plan, especially if you need to secure financing. Even if not, it will serve as a guide to start and grow the business. Also very important is a marketing plan. People must know you exist. Setting up a work space separate from your living areas plays an important role. Organize an area conducive to the type of work you do.
Pittman also tells his clients to open a separate bank account and find an accountant to help you set-up your accounting system. This will help you when tax season arrives.
One of the most important aspects of working at home is discipline. You must set work hours and discipline yourself like in any other job.
