Skating Rink motivates students

» 1 Comment | Post a Comment

In Marion Tuesday night students from one middle school were rewarded by a local business.

Behind the scenes Pee Dee Skateland's been working with area schools to help motivate their children to improve their grades and test scores.

The incentive is a free skating party, which also includes free rentals and discounted food.

Tuesday night's they held a party for Johnakin Middle School students, and the principal said the students invited improved their MAP scores by ten points or scored advanced or proficient.

"The kids are excited. They have a reason to work harder in school," Pete Lee, Owner of Pee Dee Skateland said. "When you get 349 kids, over half the population of Johnakin School tonight this is just a phenomenal success. When we first started this thing it started with just 40 or 50 kids."

Lee said that all he needs in return is knowing he's helping students reach their potential.

More parties book for April and May.

Participating schools include Gregg, Timrod, Latta, and Marion schools.
