The Voorhees College Student Government Association president 2008-09 is a Darlington native whose theme for the academic school year is “Empowering the Present to Impact the Future.”

Bryan Jerome Berry is a senior majoring in sociology. He said the association is planning for an exciting year that will bring a new meaning to the word “business.”

“I don’t want to play the game of politics,” Berry said. “It is my endeavor to stick to the relevant issues that affect our student body.”

Berry has been a minister for six years. He is the pastor’s assistant at Nation of Warriors Revival Center in Denmark.

Berry said much of his attention during his presidency will be on the spiritual aspect of the college experience.

“I believe that all aspects are important in life, but only the spiritual aspects help you get through life,” he said.

Berry is also a member of the Student Support Services Program and the chaplain for Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. He is chairman of the fraternity’s mentoring program for young men titled “Guide Right.” Participation among campus organizations will be one of his main objectives as the association’s president.

“We want to include each of our organizations in planning and carrying out our activities,” Berry said. “The goal is to bridge the gap for a better college experience among student life at Voorhees.
“My cabinet and I are working hard together to set a precedent for succeeding SGA officers.

“One of our goals is to implement an activity fee within the cost of attendance at VC to lessen the burden of student solicitation.”

Shampale Williams is a Student Government Association Judicial Council member and junior mass communication major. She said she has worked with Berry on projects and he is role model for Voorhees students.

Berry is highly respected across campus,” Williams said. “Students not only look up to him, they admire him.”

In his leisure, Berry enjoys reading, listening to music, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. His goals include receiving a master’s degree in education and divinity.

But his ultimate goal is to be an elementary school principal.

Berry said Voorhees will play a vital role in preparing him for a successful future.

“When I achieve my goals, I know that I will be able to look back at Voorhees as being a community of scholars that prepared me for my future,” he said.

Berry is the son of Phillip Wallace and Brenda Berry. He enrolled at Voorhees in 2005 after graduating from Darlington High School.

Voorhees College is a private, coeducational institution affiliated with the Episcopal Church and the United Negro College Fund. From its founding in 1897, it has evolved into a leading four-year liberal arts college fully accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
