St. John’s Episcopal Church will host a Hymn Festival at 5 p.m. Saturday.
The program will feature rousing renditions of favorite hymns with accompaniment by brass quartet and timpani.
Guest conductor Erick Figueras will direct a choir of singers from area churches. William B. Mills will serve as organist.
Figueras has been a South Carolina resident for five years. Prior to moving, he was a teacher and professional singer in New York.
Figueras has performed professionally with the New York Philharmonic, The American Symphony Orchestra, The Greenleaf Chamber Players, The New York Choral Artists and the Chamber Orchestra of the Curtis Institute of Music in choral concerts at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and in Europe.
His career highlight is the New York Philharmonic Memorial and Benefit Concert for Sept. 11. He performed Brahms’ A German Requiem.
He has taken part in two Live from Lincoln Center broadcasts and served as a recording artist for Titan Sports.
Figueras earned his bachelor of music degree from the Conservatory of Music at the State University of New York at Purchase. He composed the songs for his senior recital.
Later, he received a master’s in music education from Manhattanville College with additional postgraduate study in education at Harvard.
He is pursuing a doctor of musical arts degree in music education at Boston University.
In addition to singing and teaching, Figueras has been active as a professional church musician, composer, and choral director for the past 15 years.
Locally, he has sung as a soloist with the Florence Masterworks Choir and has performed a recital of original compositions at Francis Marion University.
Figueras is music director at Lake City United Methodist Church and South Florence High School.
