Byrdie Richardson Poole
Byrdie Richardson Poole of Charlotte died Sept. 2, 2008. Mrs. Poole, a member of Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, WMU member, worked with children in Memory Work and was the Director of the Flower and Beautification Committee, was predeceased by her husband, Wilton H. Poole, and her parents, Sam and Annie Richardson of Mullins.
Survivors include her children, Roxanne Phillips of Charlotte, Larry Poole of Little River, Judy Gunnells of Mt. Holly, N.C., and Rene’ Poole of Charlotte; granddaughters, Brittany Gunnells of Charlotte and Kristin Gunnells of Mt. Holly, N.C., and Lindsey Anne Poole of Little River; and a great-grandson, Elijah Chidester of Charlotte. A funeral was conducted at Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church on Sept. 5. Interment followed in Sharon Memorial Park. Samuel Johnson
Samuel Ezekiel Johnson, 74, died on Aug. 27, 2008 in Kindred Hospital of Charleston. He was born in Gresham to the late Arnold and Lena Lucille Johnson and was the husband of the former Lillian Howell. A funeral was on Sunday, Aug. 31 2008 at Soul Chapel AME Church, with the Rev. Michael A. Holmes officiating. Interment was in New Jersey. Jackson & McGill of Marion serves the family.
Annie Bell Rowell
Annie Bell "Squeaky" Rowell, 78, died on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008 in her home. She was the daughter of the late John H. and Lira Tennie Rowell and was a member of Tabernacle AME Church, where she was a member of the choir. She retired from So-Pak-Co of Mullins after 20 years of service. A funeral was at the church on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008. The Rev. Geraldine Dixon is pastor and the Rev. Joseph Bennett presided and offered words of comfort. Interment was in the church cemetery on Bay Road. She is survived by her brother Marvin. Jackson & McGill of Marion serves the family.
Henry Legette
Sgt. Henry Eugene Legette, 62, died on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008. He was born in Rains to Virginia Currie Legette and the late Eugene Legette. He was a 1967 graduate of Johnakin High School and was a sergeant in the U.S. Army and was retired from the S.C. National Guard after 27 years of service. He served in the Gulf War in Kuwait and in Operation Desert Storm between 1990-1991. He was a member of Holy Temple Church of Mullins. He is survived by his mother, his children, and his sister, Betty Rogers of Marion. A funeral was on Friday, Sept. 5, 2008 at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Marion, with Bishop Kevin Legette as eulogist. Interment was at Florence National Cemetery. Jackson & McGill of Marion serves the family.
Johnny Lee Murphy
Johnny Lee "Fever" Murphy, 52, died on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008 in his home. A graduate of Rains-Centenary High School, he was a member of Good Hope AME Church. He married the former Joanne Boatwright. A funeral was on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008 at Good Hope, with the Rev. Raye T. Nelson, pastor, eulogist. He is survived by his daughter, Sonia Spears; sister, Lillian; and brothers, Eric and Jerome.
Maggie Cross
Maggie Howard Cross, 87, was born on April 15, 1921 to the late Luke and Vila Howard. She joined New Hope Holiness Church in Rains at an early age, where she served on the Senior Choir and the Treasury Board. She retired from Russell Stover in 1991 and was the widow of the late Clifford Cross. She was preceded in death by her son, Joseph. She was the sister of Alice Nichols, Janie Mae Brown, and Vera McKenzie. She is survived by her children, Lillian Reaves of Rains, Janie Alston, Doris Rowell, Delores Williams, Otis and James, Sammie and Clarence, both of Delray Beach, Fla., Flora Gleaton of Murrells Inlet, and Jimmy Coit of Winston-Salem, N.C.
A funeral was on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Penderboro, with the Rev. Eddie Davis eulogist. Interment was at Devotion Gardens. Jackson & McGill of Marion serves the family.
Louise C. Koschel
Lousie Cribb Koschel, 86, widow of Charles William Koschel, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008 in McLeod Hospice House, Florence, after an illness. She was born Dec. 25, 1921 in Marion County, a daughter of the late Jimmy John Cribb and the Mary France Richardson Cribb. Mrs. Koschel was a homemaker and a member of Reedy Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving Mrs. Roschel are a sister-in-law, Eleanor Swindell of Hampton, Va.; four grandsons, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Koschel was predeceased by two sons, Robert Charles Koschel and William R. Koschel; two brothers, Esau Cribb and G.P. “Buster” Cribb; and three sisters, Maggie Bridgman, Flossie Garrett and Lottie Altman.
Services were at 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, 2008 at the Chapel of Smith-Collins Funeral Home, with the Rev. Darrell Floyd officiating. Burial followed at Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News, Va. Mary Estelle Shelley Martin
Mary Estelle Shelley Martin, 86, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008 in Conway Manor. Mrs. Martin was born March 16, 1922 in Horry County, a daughter of the late Franklin Grady and Ruby Jane Johnson Shelley. She was a member of Pauley Swamp Baptist Church. Mrs. Martin was predeceased by her husband, the Rev. Julian Clarence Martin, who served as pastor of Pauley Swamp Baptist Church for 28 years before his death; a son, Carl E. Martin; two daughter-in-laws, Grovene Martin and Rusha Martin; a granddaughter, Dana Martin; two brothers, Elbert Shelley and James Shelley; and one sister, Winnie Roberts.
Surviving her are two sons, Bobby L. Martin and wife June of Marion and Donald O. Martin and wife Linda of Columbia; two daughters, Betty M. Graham and husband Jimmy of Conway and Jo Ann Bruton and husband Russell of Galivants Ferry; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Martin of Conway; nine grandchildren, Eddie Martin, Andy Martin, Darren Martin, Stephen Martin, Gregg Martin, Michael Martin, Martin Graham, Gretchen Rabon, and Rusty Bruton; five step-grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one brother, Eugene Shelley of Conway; four sisters, Louise Lewis and Esther Dyson, both of Aynor, Marie Jordan of Conway and Hazel King of Laurinburg, N.C.
Services were at 2 p.m. Monday at Pauley Swamp Baptist Church with the Rev. Terry Grainger officiating. Entombment followed in Hillcrest Mausoleum directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel. Memorials may be sent to Pauley Swamp Baptist Church, 7480 Pauley Swamp Road, Conway, 29527.
Joyce Rabon Small
Joyce Annette Rabon Small, 68, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008 in Marion County Medical Center after an illness. She was born July 9, 1940 in Marion County, a daughter of the late Hence and Nannie Dale Owens Bullard. Mrs. Small had worked at Marvel Lamp Co., Pilliod of Nichols and Supreme Lighting Co. She was a member of Mullins-Marion Freewill Baptist Church.
Surviving Mrs. Small are her children, Terry Rabon and wife Deloris of Corpus Christi, Texas, Tony Rabon of Mullins, Tammy Hardwick and husband Wally of Mullins and Teddy Rabon and wife Karen of Georgetown; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her step-children, Danny Small, Barry Small, Mitchell Small, Carol Sue Harrell and Iris Bruce; seven step-grandchildren; two sisters, Wanda Graham and husband Michael of Bayboro and Nellie Rory and husband Joe of Southern Pines, N.C.; and her beloved dog, Dolly. Mrs. Small was predeceased by her first husband, Newie Rabon; her second husband, Jack Laverne Small; and a brother, Johnnie Hammonds.
Services were at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008 at Mullins-Marion Freewill Baptist Church, with her son, the Rev. Teddy Rabon, and the Rev. Neil Hinson officiating. Burial followed in Red Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.
Scottie Wayne Floyd
Scottie Wayne Floyd, 33, died on Friday, Sept. 5, 2008 in his home. Mr. Floyd was born in Marion, a son of Betty Jo (Cookie) Floyd Grainger. He was formerly employed with Ken Baker BMW Originals.
Surviving, in addition to his mother of Marion, is a sister, Kimberly Diane Floyd of Marion and a niece, Amberlyn Nicole Smith of Marion. Services were on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008 at 4 p.m. in the Chapel of Richardson Funeral Home.
Harmon Atkinson
Harmon Atkinson, 81, of Marion, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, in a local hospital. Mr. Atkinson was born in Horry County, a son of the late William Woodberry and Maybell Tindal Atkinson. He graduated from Britton’s Neck High School and is a veteran, having served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of Union Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Cooke Atkinson; three sons, Dennis Atkinson of Conway, Sid Atkinson of Myrtle Beach and Dale Atkinson of Lexington, Ky.; a daughter, Deanna Atkinson Williams of Nashville; two brothers, David Atkinson of Britton’s Neck and Clifton Atkinson of Darlington; two sisters, Julia Bell Richardson of Britton’s Neck and Eloise A. Ammons of Marion; and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, Hebert B. Atkinson and Winston Jessie Atkinson and two sisters, Wanda Atkinson and Dora Letha Atkinson. Services were at 4 p.m., on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008 at Union Baptist Church with burial in the Church Cemetery.
