Members of the Dillon School District 3 Board of Trustees recently approved a motion to allow the administration to proceed contract negotiations for land identified as the site for the district’s new early childhood center.
Superintendent Dr. John Kirby said he hopes to have the contract completed by the end of the week.
The early childhood center is a part of a $60 million bond referendum promoted by Dillon County school districts and the Dillon County Board of Education.
It was passed in 2007.
Kirby said the site will have to undergo several inspections before the district can begin construction.
Also during the board’s Sept. 9 meeting, Barbara Smith, the district’s director of finance, presented the latest information concerning the district’s 2008-09 budget.
Kirby said the district has lost about $147,000 in Education Finance Act funds and $19,000 in Education Improvement Act funds because of the 3-percent state budget cut.
The board has decided not to reduce services, Kirby said, and will use reserve money to take care of the reduction.
The district has seen an increase in enrollment by 66 students, which will generate about $130,000.
Kirby said the district will use that money in addition to reserve fund money to cover its losses.
