A Florence man has been arrested in connection with the Sept. 5 shooting death of 28-year-old Corey Lee Byrd, Florence Police Chief Anson Shells said.
Gregory Deleon Daniels, 31, of 109 W. Roughfork St. is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, Shells said.
Daniels was arrested Wednesday on charges of reckless driving and first offense possession of one ounce or less of marijuana or 10 grams or less of hash, Florence County Detention Center booking reports show.
A passerby discovered Byrd’s body in a grassy area on the 100 block of Marlboro Street at about 5:15 a.m., Florence County Coroner M.G. “Bubba” Matthews said in an earlier report.
Police said the shooting stemmed from an argument the suspect had with Byrd the day before, Shells said.
No more arrests are expected in the shooting, the chief said. The case is, however, still under investigation.
Daniels remains in custody at the jail in Effingham awaiting a bond hearing.
Byrd was the third person found slain in Florence in a month’s time.
The body of 17-year-old Jeremiah Jenkins was discovered Aug. 30 in an abandoned building on South Irby and Cedar streets.
Jenkins was reported missing Aug. 6. An autopsy showed he had been stabbed and beaten about the head.
Police arrested three suspects in connection with his death last week.
On Aug. 27, Florence resident Willie Mae Hayes, 69, was found dead on Mallory Street after she was reported missing by her family two days earlier.
Four suspects, including two 14-year-old boys, were arrested and charged in connection with Hayes’ death.
