A Florence man was arrested Thursday after investigators said he ran over a sheriff’s deputy, Florence County Sheriff Kenney Boone said.
Phillip James Williams, 25, of 331 Azalea St. is charged with two counts of assault and battery with intent to kill, conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine, first-offense driving under suspension (license not suspended for driving under the influence), first-offense manufacture and/or possession of other substances in schedules I through III with intent to distribute, being a habitual traffic offender and a miscellaneous and nondiscernable charge, Florence County Detention Center bookings reports show.
Shatierney Nicole Hayward, 24, of 1129 Cowhead Road, Hemingway also was arrested and faces conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine and first-offense manufacture and/or possession of other substances in schedules I through III with intent to distribute, booking reports show.
The incident happened during a drug investigation at 5912 Pamplico Highway. A man traveling with a female passenger pulled up to the scene in his vehicle and were confronted by deputies, Boone said.
The suspect tried to leave the scene and struck a deputy in the process. Another deputy suffered a hand injury from the car, Boone said.
Deputies said the suspect threw a handgun and drugs from the vehicle as he tried to leave the scene. Boone said the deputies fired shots at the vehicle’s tires and were able to arrest the suspects.
The deputies received medical treatment and are expected to return to work soon, Boone said.
Williams remains in custody at at the jail in Effingham on $2,500 and $15,000 surety bonds.
Hayward also remains in custody there on a $7,000 surety bond.
