Dillon County Administrator Clay Young is expected to tender his letter of resignation to Dillon County Council after Kershaw County Council members announced they selected him to fill their county administrator position.
Kershaw County Clerk of Council Earlene Jones said the announcement was made during a Kershaw County Council meeting Tuesday. Young was one of four final candidates for the post.
Repeated telephone calls seeking comment from Young weren’t returned by press time Thursday.
Dillon County Council Chairman Harold Moody said Young hasn’t turned in his letter of resignation yet, but will soon.
“It’s a good opportunity for Clay. I’m proud that he’s decided to do it,” Moody said.
Kershaw County is a bigger county with a bigger budget and deeper pockets, Moody said, and Young can probably do more there.
Young has been Dillon County’s administrator for about seven years, Moody said.
Young, 46, also was a candidate for the Florence County administrator’s post in 2005.
Young has 19 years of experience working in S.C. government, having spent three years as Lancaster County finance director, two years as Chester County finance director and three years as Hampton County administrator, among other positions, according to a July 7 report by The State newspaper.
The State’s report said Kershaw County Council would interview the candidates July 14 and 15 and tentatively choose the new administrator July 24. The new administrator will be paid between $90,000 and $120,000, depending on qualifications.
If Young does tender his resignation, then Dillon County Council members will address the issue at their monthly meeting, which is scheduled for Sept. 24.
Dillon County Council will start the process of finding another county administrator about two weeks after they receive Young’s letter, Moody said.
