Scranton council approves Town Hall addition

Scranton town council members approved a bid for the construction of a 500-square foot addition to Town Hall during their Sept. 2 meeting.
The $48,499.89 bid is from Jamie Teal of Partners Construction, Inc. and council members will meet with Teal to get a timeline of the construction of the addition.
After the meeting, Mayor Terry Knotts said the new facility will include two handicap accessible bathrooms, shower stalls, a small break room and a small conference room.
Knotts said eventually, where the shower stalls are now will be converted into a courtroom and the Town Clerk will be moved into the old courtroom. He said the police office will remain in its present location.
Knotts said the town has shower stalls, in the event police officers or maintenance workers need to use them after doing various tasks.
The facility will be an addition to the back of Town Hall and Knotts said they will be begin construction as soon as possible.
Knotts said Phase One of construction was the remodeling of the Town Hall’s roof and Phase Two will be the addition.
The construction of the town’s roof was completed in January 2008 but Knotts was not exactly sure on the completion date.
Council members went into executive session to discuss a contractual matter.
After executive session, Council members agreed to send notices out to mobile home owners who are sev-eral months behind in rent payments. Mayor Terry Knotts said many of these individuals are several months behind in rent and it has been going on for years. Council members agreed to give these individuals 30 days to make payments, or eviction notices will be served.
After the meeting, Town Clerk, Kay Floyd said there are four mobile home owners that are behind in rent payments. The payments are $85 monthly, she said. Floyd said the town owns the property on Lee Street and the occupants own the mobile homes.
The next Scranton town council meeting will be Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. in Scranton Town Hall on US Highway 52.
