Students benefit from summer programs

It was the intention of the Marion School District 2 Summer Vacation Club to provide a setting in which children could grow intellectually, socially and emotionally… activities that kept the Palmetto Education Center buzzing with the patter of little feet. Coordinator for the summer program, Cassandra Strickland, said the program was a success and that almost 100 students participated.

During the six-week session, students were able to participate dance class, crafts, board games, cookouts, computer time (including Achieve 3000) and in math and spelling games. There was also number and shape Bingo and PE, which consisted of aerobics, silent ball, jump rope, kick ball, relay games, tug of war, basketball and football. “We read magazines, wrote stories and even made a Father’s Day card … We went to the movies, the park and took two nature walks. Children were provided with a safe orderly environment in which they could have fun,” Strickland said.

Also involved in the program this summer were Janice Weeks, Doris Mason, William Cribb, Makiesha Green, TeCheka Lasane, Leslie Warwick, Samantha Lewis, John Williams, Lena Graves and Sandra Coombs.
