CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) _ Hurricane watches have been issued for much of South Carolina's coastline as Tropical Storm Hanna moves slowly toward the U.S.
The National Weather Service issued the watches at 5 a.m. Thursday for areas just north of Edisto Beach, S.C., stretching 250 miles northeast to Surf City, N.C.
A hurricane watch means hurricane conditions are possible within 36 hours.
Forecasters have said the storm, which could grow to a Category 1 hurricane, could threaten South Carolina's north coast early Saturday.
As of the 5 a.m. advisory, the storm's center was about 770 miles south-southeast of Wilmington, N.C., moving toward the northwest at 12 mph, with sustained winds of near 70 mph.
Emergency officials in South Carolina are closely watching the storm and say there will be time to evacuate if needed.
