CONWAY – Horry County remains at a Level 3 Operating Condition (OPCON 3) in preparation for Tropical Storm Hanna. OPCON 3 means that the storm poses a significant threat to Horry County.
County officials are in continual discussions with South Carolina Emergency Management, the National Weather Service, and coastal communities including local municipalities.
Horry County could start to feel the impact of the approaching storm early Friday morning into Friday late afternoon, with the strongest conditions being felt late Friday evening into early Saturday morning.
The current track brings Hanna into the South Carolina/North Carolina border at the extreme northeastern tip of Horry County as a potential Category 1 storm.
As the storm approaches and makes landfall, residents of Horry County can expect 40 – 60 m.p.h. sustained winds, 2-4 inches of rain, and a chance of isolated tornadoes. Storm surge could be 2-4 feet with an elevated high tide that is 1-3 feet above normal.
Citizens should start to survey their property to mitigate the potential of flooding such as making sure storm drains and gutters are clear of debris.
Citizens are reminded that any loose outdoor items such as patio furniture or toys could become airborne.
All outdoor items should be secured by bringing it inside. It is also advised that people avoid flooded areas and downed power lines.
Citizens are also advised to use caution the next several days if swimming in the ocean due to the strong potential of rip currents.
