Radio Free Florence and Cornerstone Baptist Church are sponsoring a Leeland concert Sunday at the church.
Leeland is an American Christian rock band from Baytown, Texas. Leeland Mooring is the lead singer of the band, which was formed in 2004. Mooring’s first name was used as the five-member band’s name because the members said that “it sounded cool.”
“The purpose of Radio Free Florence is to introduce Christian rock music to the local community,” said Kris Meade, who operates Radio Free Florence. “We want to connect people with the local church and that’s exactly what we’re doing Sunday night with Leeland and Cornerstone Baptist.”
Meade said contemporary Christian radio stations in the Pee Dee have been shy in promoting Christian rock music for various reasons.
“But the listeners really want to hear it,” he said. “Our Internet Radio station (www.radiofreeflorence.com) has over 14,000 listeners.
“We also have another 2,500 listeners on our brand new Sunday morning broadcast aired from 8 to 10 a.m. on BadDog 97.4 FM each week. We are very excited about being at the forefront of bringing Christian rock music to the Pee Dee area.”
Meanwhile, Meade is a modern-day disc jockey who plays a variety of rock and hip-hop music. He doesn’t sit at a turntable like the DJs of old and the station he operates is spartan. It’s so spartan that it doesn’t even use AM or FM frequencies.
Meade operates Radio Free Florence, an online station that specializes in Christian music. He says Christian music has grown a lot.
Meade is trying to reach the 12- to 24-year-old market with Christian rock and hip-hop music.
“The artists on our station believe in a greater love in this world,” he said. “It is a love found in Jesus Christ. We want our listeners to find this same love.”
Meade became a Christian while attending high school in Moncks Corner.
“Christian music helped me survive high school,” he said. “That’s where I developed a passion for this kind of music.”
Meade grew up Episcopalian, but became a Baptist while attending college at North Greenville University.
But what does he enjoy the most about life?
“Using the talent and passion that God gave me to encourage other people,” he said. “It’s evident that God works through people in many different ways.”
