The 13-year-old killed Saturday night in a boat crash on the Intracoastal Waterway in Socastee died from head injuries, according to Horry County coroner Robert Edge.

The S.C. Department of Natural Resources continues reconstructing the boat crash that killed Shayne Odermatt of Aiken.

Three others in the boat, Odermatt’s grandparents and aunt, were taken to the Medical University of South Carolina in critical condition.

All three are out of intensive care and off of respirators, according to family members.

Charges against two Myrtle Beach men could be upgraded, according to Lieutenant Robert McCullough with the DNR.

DNR investigators plan on interviewing the surviving victims Wednesday, according to McCullough.

Horry County Police charged 28-year-old Nicholas Macklen and 21-year-old Brandon Scott McDevitt with first-degree burglary Tuesday.

DNR officers charged the pair Tuesday with criminal conspiracy in connection to the boat crash.

DNR officers charged 20-year-old Elizabeth Parness and 26-year-old Amber Walker with accessory after the fact because investigators said the pair helping and harboring Macklen and McDevitt get away from the crash and impeding the investigation.

Authorities said Macklen went on the run following the crash.

Tuesday, Macklen turned himself in at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center where a judge set bond all four suspects in the crash.

The crash happened Saturday around 8:30 p.m. on the waterway, just south of the Highway 544 Bridge.

Horry County Police said Macklen and McDevitt kicked the door in and stole a television from a home on Folly Road in Socastee, only about a mile north of the crash site.

The victim in the burglary told police she arrived home Saturday and saw two men running out of her home and jump into a boat and head south down the waterway.

The pair is charged with stealing a 42” television from the home, according to a police report.

Tuesday, a county magistrate set bond on Parness and Walker at $10,000 each and denied bond for Macklen and McDevitt on the criminal conspiracy charges.

The judge called both Macklen and McDevitt a “danger to society” and said their criminal histories played a factor in his decision.

Both suspects are currently on probation for 2007 convictions.

Walker has a one-year-old baby with Macklen, but the relationship between Parness and the other three was not disclosed.

A circuit court judge will have to set bond on the burglary charges at a later date.

If convicted of the burglary charges, Macklen and McDevitt face life in prison.
