Storm causes SC governor to return from GOP convention

»  Comments | Post a Comment

COLUMBIA -- Gov. Mark Sanford is returning to South Carolina to deal with Tropical Storm Hanna.

Sanford spokesman Joel Sawyer says the governor has been in Minnesota this week attending the Republican convention, but decided to fly back home Wednesday because of the increasing risk that Hanna would affect the state in some way.

The governor is responsible for issuing evacuations and plans to discuss the situation with emergency officials Wednesday afternoon.

Storms have now disrupted two speeches Sanford was supposed to give the GOP convention. Sanford was supposed to speak Monday, but the convention schedule was pared down because of Hurricane Gustav.

That speech was rescheduled for Thursday, but Sanford will be in South Carolina.
