With Tropical Storms Hanna and Ike lurking in the Atlantic, the City of Myrtle Beach has raised its readiness to OPCON 4. That level includes continuously monitoring the threat, reviewing all plans and procedures, and advising personnel and placing them on stand-by status. The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at Fire Station No. 4 on Howard Parkway also is ready and will be activated if a storm threatens.
In a news release from the city of Myrtle Beach today, leaders are asking residents and businesses to check supplies and make plans, in the event that an evacuation is ordered. This means packing an emergency kit and planning your evacuation. It's suggested you plan in advance of a storm. Then, if an evacuation order comes, move quickly, because the weather will deteriorate.
Remember to secure or bring indoors all tools, lawn furniture, trash cans, bicycles and anything else that could blow around in a storm. It’s also a good idea to keep important papers, such as insurance policies and ownership records, in one place, so they’re easy to find when you’re in a hurry to leave. In case your family is separated, designate an out-of-state friend or relative as the “family contact,” so everyone can check in after a disaster.
Hurricane Safety Tips...
Know your evacuation route, set up a family contact point, stock an emergency kit, and make sure you have enough gas in the tank.
