One person died and three others remain in critical condition after two boats collided on the Intracoastal Waterway just south of the Highway 544 Bridge.
The crash happened around 8 p.m. Saturday and killed 13-year-old Shayne Odermatt of Aiken, according to Horry County deputy coroner Tamara Willard.
Three others in the boat are close family members of Odermatt, according to investigators.
Horry County Police received a call about a burglary at a water-front home on a couple miles north of the crash site.
Investigators think two suspects broke into the home and stole a television, then used a boat to getaway from the scene.
The burglary happened at a home on Folly Road where police said the suspects made off with a 32” television.
Police said the two burglary suspects then crashed into four people in a boat.
Three other victims in the boat were taken to the Medical University of South Carolina and remained there as of this posting, according to DNR Lieutenant Robert McCullough.
Investigators said the suspect’s boat was capsized and resting on the bank of the waterway when rescue crews arrived Saturday night.
The DNR Dive Team spent several hours Sunday combing the bottom of the Intracoastal Waterway looking for evidence and any other clues that would lead investigators to the suspects in the case.
Both boats involved in the crash were taken into police custody and held until the investigation into what happened is completed.
Willard did not have updated conditions of the three survivors as of this posting.
Willard said a preliminary cause of death should be known sometime within the next couple of days.
