North Carolina voters get more time to vote before Election Day

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The lines at the Brunswick County Board of Elections in Bolivia were fairly short Friday morning, meaning Chuck Hamilton and his wife could easily get in and out to vote early.
"There's a lot of issues to vote about (this year)," said Hamilton after he exited the polls. "I believe there's going to be some big crowds (on Election Day)," he said.
There have already been some very big crowds at all eight of Brunswick County's early voting spots, said Director Of Elections Greg Bellamy.
"We anticipated this type of turn-out," Bellamy said. "What little lines we've had have been very manageable," he said.
Brunswick County began setting up early voting satellite locations, in addition to the central office, 8 years ago.
"As time progressed, people have become more and more familiar with the polling places, and comfortable with the process, they're used to it more," said Bellamy.
North Carolina elections officials voted to allow counties to extend early voting until 5:00 p.m. for Saturday. Some counties voted individually to keep the original hours, meaning voting will end at 1:00 p.m.
Brunswick County will not stay open later.
The locations in Brunswick County are:
- North Brunswick High School, Leland
- Belville Elementary School, Leland
- Brunswick Educational Transition Center, Supply
- Brunswick Community College Annex, Southport
- Oak Island Recreation Center, Oak Island
- National Guard Armory, Shallotte
- Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary, Ash
"The same folks that work in these locations, are working on election day," said Bellamy. "There's the fatigue factor, (and) they have to deliver the voting machines to the polling places. We've got to do all of that to be ready for Tuesday."
Scotland County elections officials voted to keep the same hours, meaning voting ends at the county's elections office in Laurinburg at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Robeson County elections officials voted to stay open until 5:00 p.m.
The locations to vote early on Saturday are:
- Robeson County Board Of Elections, Lumberton
- Robeson County Public Library, Pembroke
- Robeson County Public Library, Maxton
Columbus County elections officials voted to keep the same hours, and voting will continue until 8:00 p.m. Friday at the following locations:
- Columbus County Board of Elections, Whiteville
One stop voting locations in:
- Bolton
- Fair Bluff
- Chadbourn
- Tabor City
- Riegelwood
- East Columbus Senior Center
- Old Dock community
