A 14-year-old boy is charged with murder following the fatal shooting of his pregnant mother and her unborn child Sunday night.
The boy’s 12-year-old sister was shot in the neck in the incident and was reported in stable condition Monday morning, according to Chief Deputy Tom Gainey of the sheriff’s office.
The girl is expected to survive, according to Gainey.
The shooting occurred at about 7:15 p.m. Sunday. Deputies were called to a 3502 Cross Swamp Road, where they discovered the body of a woman who had been shot multiple times, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office. The suspect's sister said the boy and his mother argued the day before the shooting.
Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee identified the victim as Sherryle Evone Terry, 35. She was eight months pregnant, according to Hardee.
Hardee pronounced Terry dead at the scene and ruled her death and that of the unborn child homicides. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday, according to a news release from the coroner’s office.
The teenage suspect in the shooting is in custody at the Department of Juvenile Justice charged as a juvenile with murder and assault and battery with intent to kill, according to the sheriff’s office.
Fourth Circuit Solicitor Jay Hodge said Monday that his office has petitioned the family court to charge the youth as an adult. However, a ruling from the Family Court could take four to six weeks due to the process of evaluation.
Deputies arrested the suspect at a residence in Florence County at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the sheriff’s office.
The State Law Enforcement Division and the Florence County Sheriff’s Office are assisting in the investigation, authorities said.
