James Hoyt Dozier
James Hoyt Dozier, 86, a Los Altos, Calif., attorney, died Sept. 28, 2008. Mr. Dozier had lived in Los Altos since 1959, when as a Navy pilot based at Alameda Naval Air Station, he flew his jet over the orchards of Los Altos and spotted a row of new homes going up at the end of Grant Road. He and his wife, Virginia, raised their four children there.
Mr. Dozier was born July 12, 1922, in Marion. His parents were deaf and unable to speak, so his paternal grandmother helped raise him and his sister. He graduated from Wake Forest University in 1944 with a Bachelor’s Degree in business, and entered the naval flight training program at Pensacola. After he became a Navy pilot, he married Virginia Parker in 1945.
He cherished his Navy flight career long after his 1963 retirement as a Commander. He served as Squadron Commander aboard the carriers USS Coral Sea, USS Midway and USS Wasp. In 1961, while on a solo flight over Atsugi, Japan, the right windscreen flew off his F3 jet at 25,000 ft., exposing him to freezing winds, thin air and loss of maneuverability. Rather than eject from the plane and endanger anyone on the ground, he flew the disabled aircraft for an hour to safety. He was later awarded the Air Medal for his courage.
In 1963, Mr. Dozier became Finance Director for the City of Los Altos. An apricot orchard at City Hall still stands because he advised the City Council to preserve it rather that pour concrete and put up a foundation. He attended Santa Clara University Law School in the evenings while working for the City of Los Altos. He and his oldest son, James Jr., passed the California bar exam on the same day in 1972.
He opened his law practice and enjoyed his third career as a real estate and estate-planning attorney in Los Altos for 30 years, practicing with his youngest son, Joseph, who joined him in 1981. He worked in his Los Altos office until a week before his passing.
His character was formed by service to family, community and country. His courage was formed from years of landing jet fighters on aircraft carriers on the open seas. He lived by these words. Do not procrastinate, make a choice, stay with your decision and do not look back.
He is survived by his children James H. Dozier Jr. (Pam) of Salinas, Calif., John P. Dozier of Cupertino, Calif., Joseph W. Dozier (Vivian) of Los Altos and Janet Dozier Shannon (Mark) of Poway. Calif.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Grace Gibbons of Charlotte, N.C. He was predeceased buy his wife, Virginia in 2003.
A memorial service was on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008, at 11 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church, Miramonte Avenue, Mountain View, Calif. All donations may be made in his name to either Wake Forest University, Calloway School of Business, Box 7227, Winston-Salem, 27109; or to the USS Midway Museum, 910 N. Harbor Drive, San Diego, Calif., 92101.
