For nearly three years, Marion County Council member Milton Troy II has been working closely with local, state and federal officials to bring an outdoor wellness center to the town of Nichols.

On Monday, state officials Sen. Dick Elliott, Sen. Kent Williams and Rep. Jim Battle met with Troy, other county officials and Nichols officials and citizens to present a $100,000 state competitive grant to the county to use on the 8-acre site.

With $150,000 grant received about a year ago through the auspices of U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, county and town in-kind and matching monies, the $300,000 project is on tap to be dedicated in the spring, Troy said.

The site will include restrooms, picnic shelter, walking trail, basketball court area and improvements to the baseball diamond on the site.
