A juvenile is facing a charge of murder following the fatal shooting of a pregnant Lamar area woman and her unborn child Sunday night.
A 12-year-old girl was shot in the neck in the incident and was reported in stable condition Monday morning, according to Chief Deputy Tom Gainey of the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office.
The shooting occurred at about 7:15 p.m. Sunday. Deputies were called to a 3502 Cross Swamp Road, where they discovered the body of a woman who had been shot multiple times, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee identified the victim as Sherryle Evove Terry, 35. She was eight months pregnant, according to Hardee.
Hardee pronounced Terry dead at the scene and ruled her death and that of the unborn child homicides. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday, according to a news release from the coroner’s office.
The teenage suspect in the shooting is in custody at the Department of Juvenile Justice charged as a juvenile with murder and assault and battery with intent to kill, according to the sheriff’s office. Authorities say he could be charged as an adult after a review of the case with the Fourth Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
Deputies arrested the suspect at a residence in Florence County at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the sheriff’s office.
The State Law Enforcement Division and the Florence County Sheriff’s Office are assisting in the investigation, authorities said.
