Methodists
build church
Ground will be broken at 1 p.m. Sunday for a $125,000 building for St. Luke Methodist Church located on Dunlap Drive just off the Segars Mill Highway west of Hartsville. The building will be the first of two units, which together will provide adequate worship and Sunday school facilities for a congregation, which is expected to grow to at least 600 in the not distant future.
St. Luke was organized in June 1957, by a group from Wesley Methodist Church and was chartered just one year ago in October, with some 200 members. Under Pastor Wayne W. Ballentine the number has since grown to about 250.
The building committee held more than 20 meetings in the process of making plans for their church. They are P.H. Beattie, general chairman; F.C. Chitty Jr., general vice-chairman and chairman of architecture and construction; Hey-ward Galloway, secretary; James H. Crouch, finance; Edwin T. Yarborough, worship and religious art; Robert V. Blackwell, Christian Education; Robert Bass, fellowship and recreation; J.O. Nichols, kitchen and
serving; Joe W.B. Taylor, administration and special facilities; Lee Colburn, grounds, Joe H. McCullough, utilities and comfort.

Lewis heads IPTAY club
Harold Lewis of Hartsville was elected president of the Darling-ton County IPTAY Club Tuesday evening at a meeting of the organization in Darlington.
Lewis succeeds Dr. G.J. Lawhon of Hartsville as head of the county IPTAY group, which is one of the leading counties in South Carolina for IPTAY membership, boasting some 200 boosters. All in all, there are 8,001 members over the county.
Other officers named at the evening meeting were Wilton Carter of Lamar, and Paul Booth of Darlington, vice presidents.
Gene Willimon, IPTAY secretary of IPTAY, gave the principal address, then he showed films of the North Carolina-Clemson game.

Foxes win again
The high-flying Red Foxes had a big week in walloping Marion's Swamp Foxes to the tune of 41-13, dropping Marion to third place in the Pee Dee Conference, while they took the first place spot in the standings. Darlington's Blue Devils now occupy second place, with a tie the only blemish on their undefeated record.
Before this game, the Red Foxes were ranked tenth among class AA teams in the state by The Charlotte Observer Board of Coaches poll. In a sports writers' poll, which was published in S.C. daily newspapers, the Foxes were in thirteenth place.
Coach Bill Seigler chose tackle Johnny Barfield and center Milton Byrd as the standouts of the week.
Wilson Smith, end, was named "Lineman of the Week" for the Pee Dee Conference.
The whole team was outstanding, playing near perfect offensive ball. Marion found it hard to move against the line, against such standouts as Beasley Atkinson, Woody Barfield, Nick Hall and Jimmy Ousley. The backs also contributed much. They are Tommy Huggins, Press Beattie, Jim Garland and Jimmy Bell.

Seven Foxes qualify
A year ago, the Hartsville High girls tennis team came in fifth in the State AAAA Tennis Tournament.
It was a logical step up for the team, as they had posted progressively better finishes in the previous two seasons.
The Lady Foxes will now try to better that fifth place finish when they compete in the 1983 version of the State AAAA Tournament.
Seven Lady Foxes will be making the trip by virtue of finishing first or second in last week's Eastern AAAA Tourna-ment at Florence. Hartsville, as a team, came in second in the tournament to winner South Florence.
Lisa Ann Smith continued an undefeated season by taking the region championship at number one singles. She is a sophomore.
Her seventh grade sister, Beth, was the region champion at number six singles.
Allison Tucker finished second in number four singles, and Tonya Tinnell was second in number five singles. Both are juniors.
Greta Eubanks and Rolfe Godshalk who played number two and number three singles respectively were beaten in the semifinals by South Florence players.
In doubles, Tinnell and Katherine Eubanks were region champions in the third flight, winning in straight sets over a South Florence team.
In number one doubles, Tucker and Lisa Anne Smith were region runners-up and at number two doubles, Godshalk and Eubanks took their opponents in a third set tiebreaker before falling and finishing second.

Herrington wins events
Hartsville High runner Terrance Herrington won two events in a four-day span last week.

In the girls division, Paula Watkins finished fourth in 21:36.
Herrington continued his winning ways Saturday by capturing the title in the Darlington Lung Run.
Watkins took top honors as the first female across the finish line; her time was 48 minutes even.
