Robocall group agrees to $100K penalty in NC

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) _ A group that made automated phone calls to voters before the May primary in violation of North Carolina law will pay a $100,000 fine.

Attorney General Roy Cooper also said Tuesday the group, Women's Voices Women Vote, agreed not to work in the state until after Election Day.

The group's robocalls told listeners a voter registration packet was coming in the mail. But the traditional registration period had already ended. Cooper says the calls broke state law by failing to include information on the group or a way to contact the organization.

The Washington-based group didn't immediately respond to Cooper's announcement. In April, the group's president apologized and said the calls were designed to boost voter turnout among unmarried women.
