Horry County school district officials said in light of the impending state budget cuts, they are ready to make adjustments, if necessary.
Jeff Riddle, Chief Finance and Human Resources officer for Horry County schools said at the request of the school board, the finance department already has long range goals in place for the budget.
Riddle said they plan three to five years ahead so they can adjust to the economic climate. Some of the cost saving measures they are looking at include going back and re-examining budgets for all the departments, looking into travel expenses, which he said aren’t a large part of the budget, looking at each position when it becomes available to see it they need to fill it, and possibly having maintenance and technology crews work four instead of five days. Riddle said none of these measures are set in stone; they are just some cost saving measures the district is looking into. Riddle said a lot of little things can add up to a lot of savings.
“Does it mean we'll totally weather it, no, but does it mean we won't have some challenges for the remainder of the year, no we'll have those but we just think we're well positioned to deal with it without being overly disruptive to the business we're in.” said Riddle.
Riddle also said the district has financial reserves they can access. One cost saving measure Riddle said will likely not happen in a four day school week. He said the district is reluctant to do that because it is extremely disruptive.
