Concerned Citizens rally to fight megadump

»  Comments | Post a Comment

INDIANTOWN - About thirty people rallied, despite cold and rain at the Battery Park community park Saturday, Oct 18 to strategize, raise funds, and enroll new members, in their opposition to the proposed Nesmith megadump.
"We want to let our councilmen know that we are still on the case and we haven't forgotten about it," said Tommy Stuckey. "We don't want a mega-dump anywhere in Williamsburg County."
James Scott, said that County Supervisor Stanley Pasley had been holding meetings in the county to try to drum up support for the landfill. "He's trying to drive a wedge between the citizens of eastern Williamsburg and Kingstree, and we need to keep focused and not back away on this issue. He's saying that this is something that Mr. Treme started, but that's not the information I've gotten. I understand that Mr. Treme was underway on an agreement with Berkeley County to do a joint landfill."
(The Observer has not received notification of any meetings in favor of the landfill.)
Nelson Chandler said "We need to make sure the rest of the county knows we are fighting for them as well. If for some reason this site does not work out - say if it's got too much wetland, or has an endangered species - they will be looking for another site in the county for a megadump. The whole county needs to get together to stop this."
He continued, "They are telling people that the alternative is too expensive; it's going to cost everyone a lot of money if we don't have a megadump. We can't take that at face value. When they tell people that, we need to ask. Where are your numbers? Where are your documents? Where is your study? Every time I ask they don't want...they've got noting to show for it."
Mary Davis said, "God prepared Moses to go to Egypt to tell Pharoah, 'let my people go!' Pharoah was so hard hearted, he didn't let the people go, and he and his people got drowned. All we've got to do is to cry out to the Lord, and he will answer us. I tell you, it's bad, when you love money so much that you'll do anything to get a dollar. The Lord can move through us to change what happens."
The Concerned Citizens of Williamsburg incorporated on October 1, 2008 to "promote the protection of natural resources, the environment and the lifestyle of Williamsburg County." Membershiip is open to all who share the interests and goals of the organization. They can be reached at PO Box 22, Nesmith 29580 or by e-mail at cccofw@yahoo.com
The regularly scheduled meeting of the Williamsburg County is Tuesday, October 21 at 6 p.m. The published agenda for this meeting does not include any third readings. Third reading on the contract with MRR Williamsburg corporation had been scheduled for the last council meeting, but was tabled at that meeting.
The published agenda does include an item of "Consideration and approval of a contract to purchase land adjacent to existing landfill at Salters..." as well as several reports on various items of county business. The council agenda is normally posted on the county annex door well in advance of each meeting.
