That's Life: Economy forcing you to make changes?

»  Comments | Post a Comment

What changes are you making in your activities to accommodate for the recent economic woes?

There’s been much talk about Main Street and Wall Street and I’m wondering if ever the twain shall meet. Marion County has had one of the highest unemployment rates in the state in recent years. And that was occurring during booming economic times.

Folks in this county have suffered from lack of jobs and a murky prognosis on the future for a couple of years now, with the hope, always, that something good is just around the next corner. I find Marion County people to be resilient. They travel where they can find jobs. They take part in job retraining programs, go back to school … and nearly every month there is at least one aspiring business owner seeking to carve out a niche, offering services, opening a new business.

Many fail, but one thing about this county, some survive. And we keep on trying. I’d like to know … Are our readers more fearful about their future than they have been in the past five years? Send me a note at the office, by snail mail, fax or e-mail.

What do you think we can do when times seem so much tougher than usual? Do you own stocks? Have you seen your net worth evaporate? Are you trying to find a second job? Getting creative in selling your handiwork? Did you plant a larger garden this year? Or did you plant a smaller one because costs were high?

With your quarterly retirement or annuity statements arriving in the mail, are you more willing to continue with your investments or did you sell, sell, sell? Did you survive the Great Depression and want to share your stories with our readers? Or would you like to share the stories of your parents or grandparents?

What do “hard” times teach us about ourselves? Do we become more self-centered and call it self-reliance? Or do we work together and collaborate to see that all have enough? Have you changed your plans for celebrating the coming holidays?

Are you fearful of your future? Or looking to the future with the same views you always have? Or are you planning to move to a location that appears to have better oportunities than Marion County? Or do you work in Marion County and drive from a neighboring county because this county has the job you enjoy? Have you cancelled your cell phone, house phone, cable or satellite service? Quit eating out? Dining out more and buying fewer groceries?

How difficult will times have to become before you make such changes? What things can you live without that you enjoy having around you now? If you have stories or tips you’d like to share with others, we’d like to hear from you.
