Members of Chesterfield County School District Board of Education approved hiring the architectural firm Goforth Brown & Associates to work on a renovation project at the old Edwards School.
Ken Buck, public information officer for the district, said the board approved the administration’s recommendation to select the firm during its regular meeting Monday night.
The administration has discussed moving the alternative school into a portion of the the school and using another portion for for office space.
School district officials previously said a new roof, painting, new electrical wiring, and new heating, ventilation and air conditioning units were needed.
The building must be occupied as a school within two years after being vacated to qualify under the previous state Office of School Facilities regulations. If not, the building would have to meet new regulations.
During Monday’s meeting, Judy Watson, the district’s director of finance, updated the board on state budget cuts for the district that could come in the spring. No exact figures were given on the amount the district would have to cut from its budget.
The state Department of Education, as well as other state agencies, already have experienced a 3-percent cut during the summer. School districts across the Pee Dee and the state are searching for ways to cut back on items including school supplies, electricity and gasoline.
The board received the information for review.
In other business, Jane Pigg of the United Way of Chesterfield County presented a certificate to the board recognizing the district for being the top participant in the county fund drive.
Gene Kodama, director of S.C. Forestry Commission, presented a check for about $400,000 to the district.
Monday’s meeting also included several reports for the board to review, including a monthly financial statement, personnel recommendations, and focus renewal plans for New Heights Middle School and Pageland Elementary School.
The board’s next regular meeting is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Nov. 10 at Pageland Elementary School, 715 W. McGregor St., Pageland.
