Naden Evans
Naden Leonard Evans, born on Feb. 26, 1917, to the late Rev. James and Connie Davis Leonard, was the widow of Charles Evans and the mother of the late Anthony Evans. She lived for some time in Detroit, Mich., and for more than 30 years in Brooklyn, N.Y., but at an early age, joined St. James AME Church, where a funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008. Interment was at the church cemetery.
While living in Brooklyn, she joined the Holy Nazarene Church, where she served on the Gospel Choir and Usher Board. She is survived by her sisters Marie Leonard and Lena Tarpley of Oakdale, La., her brother, the Rev. Romeo Leonard of Columbia, and a special friend, Evadine Forde of St. Philip, Barbados.

George Staggers
George Pattan Staggers, 64, died on Friday, Sept. 26, 2008 in his home. He was the son of the late Preston and Mattie Staggers Tart and worked for the Jordan Scrap Metal Company for many years until his retirement. A funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill at the Jackson & McGill Memorial Chapel on Oct. 2, 2008, with the Elder Robin Nichols officiating. Interment was at Jackson & Daughters Cemetery.
Mr. Staggers is survived by a special friend, Joyce Legette; his sisters and brothers, Sylvia Knowlin, Marilyn Davis, Margie Turner, Cynthia Foxworth, Joan Tart of Conway, Randy Tart of Fairmont, N.C., and Jeremiah Graves of Charlotte.

Mary Lovette Grice
Mary Lovette Grice, 83, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008 in Marion County Medical Center after an illness. Services were at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct.7, in Richardson Funeral Home. Entombment followed in Palmetto Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Grice was born in Marion, a daughter of the late Perry and Mattie Lovette. She is predeceased by her husband, James Robert Grice; brothers, George, Buster, Gus and Walker Lovette; sister, Lela Hannah; and grandson, Tony Marlowe.
Mrs. Grice was retired from Heritage Sportswear where she worked for 45 years. Survivors include her sons, Larry Grice and his wife Mickey of Florence, James Eric Grice and his wife Mettie of Marion; daughters, Beverly Owens and her husband Major of Marion, Priscilla Sawyer and her husband Joe of Marion; grandchildren, Kenny Marlowe of Hickory, N.C., Jill Hobbs of Florence, Keith Owens and his wife Tara of Florence, Tammy Turner and her husband Kevin of Marion, Robin Woodberry of Marion, Tracy Falck and her husband Larry of Florence; and five great-grandchildren.

Carol Jeanette Grice Suggs
Carol Jeanette Grice Suggs, 64, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008 in the McLeod Hospice House after an illness. Services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Florence County Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Suggs was born in Marion County, a daughter of the late Lonnie Grice Sr. and Ruby Perritt Grice. She was a graduate of Marion High School and attended Dawsey United Methodist Church.
Surviving her are her husband, George Raymond Suggs Sr. of Florence; three sons, George Raymond “Ray” (Annette) Suggs Jr. of Hemingway, Russell James (Donna) Suggs and Rodney Neil (Beth) Suggs both of Florence; one brother, Lonnie Grice of Florence; two sisters, Elaine Duval of Greenwood and Sabra Longshore of Marietta, Ga.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Memorial may be made to the American Cancer Society, 950 48th Ave. North, Suite 101, Myrtle Beach, 29577.

Mildred S. Bailey
Mildred Small Bailey, 73, widow of John Lawton “J. L." Bailey Jr., died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008 in Marion County Medical Center after an illness. She was born Sept. 1, 1935 in Mullins, a daughter of the late Carson Powell Small and the Mittie McDaniel Small. Mrs. Bailey was retired from Investment Life and Trust Company and was a member of Gapway Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Adult Ladies Sunday School Class.
Surviving Mrs. Bailey are a sister, Pauline Smith and her husband Wade Ernest Smith Jr. of Mullins; a brother, J.C. Small and his friend Ruby Miles of Mullins; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Bailey was predeceased by a sister, Reba Jennie Small; and three brothers, Mason Small, James Small and Horace Small. Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 in Cedardale Cemetery, with the Rev. Chip Scruggs and the Rev. Glenn Brown officiating. The service was directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Gapway Baptist Church, P.O. Box 731, Mullins, 29574 or to the charity if one’s choice.

Carrie Bell Gause
Carrie Bell Rogers Gause, 56, died on Friday, Oct. 3, 2008. She was the daughter of the late John and Lizzie Rogers, the wife of John Henry Gause and the mother of Amy and Patrick Gause.
At an early age, she became a member of Bethel AME Church, where a funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008. The Rev. R.L. Brown, pastor, officiated, and interment was at Old Neck Cemetery. She was a member of the Hettie Chapter #314 Order of the Eastern Star, who served as flower bearers. Masonic Lodge #336 served as pall bearers. She is survived by her sisters Sadie Graves and Shirley Brown of Marion; her brothers, James, Malikiah, John, Canty and Event Rogers; a special daughter in Patricia Eaddy; and a special friend in Julie Anna Moore.

Albert B. Guess
Lt. Col. (Ret.) Albert B. Guess was born on July 11, 1923 in Santee to the late Morris and Eliza Guess. He was the husband of the former Reba General for 45 years and father of Ronald Richardson and Alberita James of Charlotte, N.C. He is survived by his brother Thomas of Vance. He was educated in Orangeburg County and earned a bachelor's of science degree from South Carolina State College. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943, and was discharged in 1946 as a corporal. He returned to service in 1951 and served in numerous theaters, including Japan, Korea, and two tours in Vietnam, before retiring in 1971 as a Lieutenant Colonel. Guess was a member of St. Phillips United Methodist Church and served as the Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of the Trustee Board, in addition to many other duties. He was a longtime board member of the United Methodist Home of Orangeburg and volunteered tirelessly in the Marion County community.
In 2006 he was awarded the Congressional Record Recognition by the Honorable James E. Clyburn of the U.S. House of Representatives to credit his many years of service. A funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill at First United Methodist Church on Friday, Oct. 10. 2008, with the Rev. Donald McAllister officiating. Interment was in St. Phillips United Methodist Church Cemetery.
