Florence police have arrested a suspect in Thursday morning’s break-in at a grocery store.

Willie Lee Briggs, 46, of 705 N. Stackley St., Florence, is charged with second-degree burglary in the case, Florence Police Maj. Carlos Raines said.

The break-in at the Piggly Wiggly on Cherokee Road was discovered about 4 a.m. Thursday. Someone broke in, took several cartons of cigarettes, then fled.

A television news viewer recognized the suspect from surveillance footage and called police, Raines said.

Briggs had been released from the Florence County Detention Center on Tuesday after being arrested Aug. 8 and charged with third or more offense shoplifting-value $1,000 or less, booking reports show.
