Brandi Cook's senior government classes went on a field trip on Sept. 17 to the S.C. Supreme Court and State Capital.
The students participated in the Class Action Program sponsored by the Supreme Court and learned how a case makes it to the Supreme Court and how the Supreme Court is different from the trial court cases they are used to seeing on television. Students heard arguments for the court case Russell Laffitte v. Bridgestone Corp. This nationally known case involved a fatal car accident caused by a tire separting from its tread. The Supreme Court does not determine if Bridgestone is at fault but if Bridgestone must give Laffitte its formula for making the tire.
After lunch, the students toured the State Capital. Pictures from the trip are available on Cook's Web site at http://www.marion1.k12.sc.us/education/staff/staff.php?sectionid=244 on the Document Manager Tab and in the Field Trip pics folder.
This trip was made possible due to a generous donation from Lawrence McElynn, who gave Cook the donation this past year when she won the State DAR History Teacher of the Year Award.
