Pee Dee Coalition, Coker College to hold candlelight vigil for domestic violence victims
The Pee Dee Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Assault and Coker College will hold a candlelight vigil in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October on Wednesday, Oct. 22, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the C.W. Coker Auditorium at Davidson Hall on the campus of Coker College.
Guest speaker for the event will be Lorie Boddie, a domestic violence survivor.
The candlelight vigil is intended to honor domestic violence victims, survivors and domestic violence service providers in the community.
The Pee Dee Coalition is also accepting donations of products such as toilet paper, paper towels and other household supplies for its emergency safe shelters. Donated items may be brought to the candlelight vigil.
The Pee Dee Coalition is a nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to the reduction of rape, family violence and child abuse and to the needs of its victims.

Vicki Arthur named
to Independent Colleges
and Universities Board
Vicki B. Arthur, vice president and general manager - Global Corporate Accounts for Sonoco, has been named to the Board of Trustees of South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities.
Five new board members were presented at the SCICU board meeting on Sept. 30 at Newberry College. Other new members to the 40-member board include Virginia L. Crocker, judicial director, S.C. Workers’ Compensation Commission (Columbia); Sam Konduros, president, SK Strategies (Greenville); Kathleen C. McKinney, shareholder, Haynesworth Sinkler Boyd (Greenville); and Jim Stuckey, managing shareholder, Littler Mendelson (Columbia).
“These individuals bring extensive experience, knowledge, and commitment to our organization’s mission, which is to advance independent higher education in South Carolina,” said Michael R. Brenan, chairman of the board.
Each board member will serve a three-year term for the 55-year-old organization which supports and promotes independent higher education through fundraising, scholarships, research, and by facilitating collaborative activities among the 20 member institutions. Over 33,000 students each year attend a private college or university in South Carolina.
Sonoco-Alcore to increase
paperboard prices
Sonoco-Alcore S.a.r.l., a wholly owned subsidiary of Sonoco, one of the largest diversified global packaging companies, announced Monday it will raise prices on all paperboard sold in the United Kingdom, Scandinavia and Russia by 25 GBP, or 40 Euros, per ton effective with all shipments after Oct. 27, according to Eddie L. Smith, vice president—Europe.
“Continued inflationary pressure, predominantly in energy and chemicals, has resulted in paperboard capacity being taken out of the market most recently in Finland, Italy, France and the U.K.,” said Smith. “Our business has maintained its commitment to reduce operating costs in order to offset this inflation, however, we are unable to continue to absorb all of these increases.”

McLeod Foundation to host estate and financial planning institute
FLORENCE — The McLeod Health Foundation is hosting an Estate & Financial Planning Institute on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008, from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the McLeod Medical Plaza Conference Center.
The institute is being coordinated by the Professional Advisory Council to the McLeod Health Foundation. Those who would be interested in attending the institute include attorneys, accountants, financial planners and life insurance agents.

Topics will be based on various gifting strategies. The program will feature nationally recognized speaker, Steven Siegel, president of The Siegel Group, a Morristown, N.J.-based national consulting firm specializing in tax consulting, estate planning and advising family business owners and entrepreneurs. Siegel holds a BS from Georgetown University, a JD from Harvard Law School and an LLM in taxation from New York University.

• Legal: The program has been approved for five hours of MCLE with five hours being approved EPP & Tax Specialty by the SC Supreme Court.
• Life insurance: This course is approved by the South Carolina Department of Insurance for Continuing Insurance Education Credit for five hours for Life, Accident & Health.
• Accounting: Guidelines will be followed in order to offer five hours of CPE credit from the Board of Accountancy.
• Certified Financial Planners: This program has been accepted by the CFP Board for five hours.

McLeod announces date for its annual Cancer Survivor's Day Celebration
FLORENCE — The McLeod Cancer Center for Treatment and Research will host the 18th Annual Cancer Survivor’s Day Celebration on Saturday, June 13, 2009, in the McLeod Medical Plaza Conference Center.
The celebration is being moved to June to coincide with National Cancer Survivor's Day.
McLeod annually hosts Cancer Survivor’s Day to honor the continued survivorship of cancer survivors in the Pee Dee.
All cancer survivors in the Pee Dee are welcome and invited to attend. More details concerning the celebration will come out as the date of the event draws near.
