Nichols Town Council members are discussing the possible gift of new property for the town’s use.
Mayor James Little said during this past Monday’s meeting that a local American Legion is making plans to donate property and a building off State Highway 9, near the city limits, to the town. Members of the American Legion Nichols Auxiliary are working on the donation, with members signing off on the deal before the gift is complete and the town receives the deed.
Little said the town’s fire department had initially asked to use the facility, but he said he made it clear that he intended to discuss the matter with council members first. Council members discussed the possibility of applying for a grant to help make improvements on the building and allowing the American Legion to reserve one night per month to use the building.
Little said the firefighters in the town have dual roles, working with other municipalities such as Mullins and Marion, which provides them training. He said both departments assist the local group when called.
In other business, council discussed the need to attract new businesses to the area and the need to promote the town and its workforce. Verna Nance, a candidate on the November ballot for a council seat, has already taken the initiative to call franchises in hopes of bringing attention to the town as a potential location, she said.
Nance said one of the stores she made a call to was Dollar General. According to the mayor, convincing companies that the town has enough people to support a business is a factor.
Council members approved the monthly financial and police report. In regards to controlling mosquitoes, council members said they are well aware of the issue in the town and have been maintaining an effort to spray continuously.
