CCU students 'Take Back the Night.'

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Dozens of Coastal Carolina University students marched through campus Tuesday night in an effort to raise awareness about sexual assault and violence on their campus called, "Take Back the Night."

Sean Pierce, with the CCU counseling center said it's just one step in a big process that if everybody takes part, CU can be part of a movement that takes a stand against sexual assault and violence

Students marched through campus of with signs and chants loud enough for the entire campus to hear.

Pierce said they march at night, because it’s usually a time they say people feel vulnerable.

"And that's when attacks are most likely to occur so we want to show that it belongs to us, not them." said Pierce.

After marching through campus, the crowd ended its campaign of awareness at the track where students told personal stories of abuse in the hopes that if they speak out, they might have a decent chance to end sexual violence.

Along with personal stories, the crowd also heard from a CCU public safety officer who told them in order to stop some of the violence, they must speak up, even when they see something happening to someone else.

Organizers of "Take Back the Night" also said the march shows students are taking an active role in their community and making a positive difference on campus.
