Sellers Mayor Luvenia Wright has issued a challenge to students from Easterling Primary, Marion Intermediate, Johnakin Middle and Marion High schools in Marion School District 1 to build the best stock market portfolios in the Mayor’s Blue Chip Investors Program.
Partnering with the S.C. Conference of Black Mayors for the second year, the S.C. Council on Economic Education developed the Mayor’s Blue Chip Investors Program to encourage students to learn more about economics, particularly the stock market. Student teams from the Marion School District 1 schools will be given a hypothetical $100,000 to play the Merrill Lynch Stock Market Game. The game introduces students to investing through hands-on activities.
Students learn how to research the companies they’re considering buying stock in and then how to complete trades. The team from each school with the best portfolio wins dinner with Mayor Wright and $50 in cash for all the students and their teacher. Mayor Wright is one of 30 black mayors participating in this school year’s competition. Underwritten with a grant from the State Budget and Control Board, the Mayor’s Blue Chip Investors Program not only teaches students about the stock market but also gives them the knowledge to make wise, informed decisions about money management, and saving and investing. In addition, it nurtures the future generation of elected officials.
The SC Council on Economic Education is a non-profit business-education partnership dedicated to providing teachers with the tools and resources needed to educate South Carolina’s students about financial literacy, economic principles and the changing global economy.
