Five Pee Dee school districts will have school board elections during the November general election.
School districts in Florence and Timmonsville, as well as Darlington, Marlboro and Williamsburg counties, all have candidates who are either seeking another term or will be a first-time board member.
Florence School District 1, Florence
Florence 1 school board candidates include incumbents Suzette Reynolds, Seat 1; Pat Gibson-Hye, Seat 2; Minister Alexis D. Pipkins, Seat 4; Glenn Odom, Seat 5; and S. Porter Stewart, Seat 7.
Benjamin Brown Jr., 33, of Florence is seeking his first term on the board against Reynolds. He is a teacher at the Darlington County Institute of Technology.
Brown said he wanted to serve on the board in order to bring an educator’s point of view to the table.
Gibson-Hye, a community activist, has three years of experience on the board.
Local attorneys Stewart and Odom have served on the board for 13 and 16 years, respectively.
No information was available on the number of years both Reynolds and Pipkins have served on the board.
Florence 4, Timmonsville
Candidates for the at-large seats in Timmonsville include incumbents Levern Edwards and board chairwoman Rose Bacot.
Opponents are David Morris, Lillie Mae Joe and Clarence Kelly.
Board vice chairwoman Betty Dowling won’t seek another term on the school board. A Republican, she is running against Democratic incumbent Mitchell Kirby in the Florence County Council District 4 race.
Darlington County
Incumbents Connell Delaine, Warren Jeffords, Charles Govan and Jamie Morphis are all seeking another term and are running unopposed.
Delaine is the operations director with the Billie Hardee Home for Boys and has served on the board since 2002.
Jeffords is an insurance agent and has 16 years of experience with the board.
Govan, a retired educator, and Morphis, a banker, joined the board in 2000.
Marlboro County
Two incumbents on the Marlboro County Board of Education will not seek another term.
Board members Billie Joe Quick, who represents District 1, and Christie Roller, who represents District 4, will not be on November’s ballot.
Newcomers Michael Coachman of Bennettsville and Frankie D. Burgess of Wallace will face off in the District 1 race.
Nan Fleming of Bennettsville is running unopposed in District 4.
Robert Goff of McColl and incumbent Chuck Barfield are running in District 6.
Williamsburg County
Incumbents Joe Lee in District 1, James H. Darby in District 3 and Lucille B. Scott in District 7 are all running against new candidates.
Theresa McCray Graham is running against Lee.
Darby will run against Kent Evans, and Scott is running against Charles T. Garner.
