Habitat for Humanity to dedicate newest home Sunday

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Darlington County Habitat for Humanity will dedicate its newest home on Sunday.

The dedication service will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday at Jerusalem Baptist Church, 301 S. Sixth Street in Hartsville, followed by an open house of the new home at 913 W. Washington St., Hartsville.

The first time home buyer is the family of Anissa McElveen which has been at different stages of the affiliate’s building program for just over one year. This processing time has been reduced to less than half the time now because of more people becoming involved in supporting and volunteering with the affiliate, according to Ron Skipper, executive director of Darlington County Habitat.

The McElveen Family will receive a dedication Bible donated by Comfort Ministries in Darlington and the keys to the house at the dedication ceremony.

Each Habitat Home is sold to a family by way of a 20-year interest free mortgage and the family is also required to complete 400 hours of “sweat equity” in the Habitat program.
Darlington County Habitat for Humanity is a tithing affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International and is given to a “Sister Habitat” in Haiti which is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere.

Habitat for Humanity is a partnering program where hard working families partner with area businesses, individuals, churches and volunteers in building their home as well as others. Habitat’s building program is currently active in the city of Darlington with Nucor Steel Corp. funding the total cost and Nucor employees building a house. This current home was framed in less than one day using all metal called “Nucon Housing.”

Skipper said the local affiliate challenges all major corporations in Darlington County to follow in the footsteps of Nucor. “This would help the local affiliate tremendously in reaching its goal of becoming self sustaining in its building program,” Skipper said. “Not only businesses are challenged, but all churches within Darlington County should step up to the challenge of supporting Habitat for Humanity on a local level.”

The local affiliate also has a Habitat Resale Store located at 120 W. Washington St. in Hartsville and is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Call 383-8517 for donations or to become a volunteer in the resale store.
