What is it going to take to get a handle on the crime in Hartsville? Another dead businessman?
How many break-ins will it take for someone to crack down on this glaring problem? Just in the last year I can name seven businesses, including mine, on the East Carolina part of town, that have suffered theft, vandalism, and now murder.
Many times the same businesses are being hit over and over. Our only recourse is to spend thousands of dollars on cameras, alarm systems and fences and pass these costs on to our customers. Unfortunately, it isn’t enough to deter these thugs from walking in to our businesses in broad daylight in the middle of town and committing these horrible crimes.
The troubling thing is that our laws and law enforcement enable and embolden the criminals. There have been instances where the perpetrator has been caught on video, arrested, released on bond and then had the audacity to return and burglarize the same business.
Where is the justice? I have been asked numerous times lately whether I carry a gun. Is that what our justice system has come to? Are we to become a band of pistol strapped vigilantes shooting first and asking questions later?
