A day after Mohawk Industries announced it will shut down its manufacturing facility in Dillon, some local business owners are assessing how the closing will affect them.
Kathy Muir co-owns Missy’s One Stop in Dillon, which is located just down the road from Mohawk Industries. Muir says the closing could mean a loss in customers.
“We’re going to lose our lunch crowd and then after work they come in and hang out and blow off some steam after work and they’ve been coming here for years and now, you know, we’re going to lose them as customers.”
Development leaders describe the shut down as yet another major blow to Dillon County. They added, however, they’re working very hard to replace such industries that are leaving.
“One thing about small communities, we all pull together and we find a way to get through it,” said Charlie Vance, chairman of the Dillon County Development Board.
The Dillon Mohawk facility has around 137 employees. Company officials say they plan to offer the workers jobs at other facilities, as well as work with state leaders to bring job fairs to the area.
