It used to be that everything was closed on Thanksgiving Day. You would maybe find a lone convenience store open, if you were lucky but these days shoppers don't have to save up all their time and energy for just the day after Thanksgiving, also known as Black Friday.
“With the economy the way it is we're giving the customers an extra option to stretch their dollar get more done in a longer period of time you know give them that extra day”, says Denise Priewe, store manager at K-Mart in Murrells Inlet.
Priewe said he is hoping open doors on Thanksgiving Day will mean busy cash registers inside.
“A lot of people are avid shoppers for the holiday season so we're just adding a convenience to them and give them some place to go so they can come in here and get started on their Christmas shopping”.
Store shopper, Judy Stark who already got a head start on her shopping wish list said waking up early on the busiest shopping day is not her cup of tea.
“I’m always looking for a good buy but Black Friday doesn't affect me in one way or another because most of the people that do that get up before dawn and have to make those big decisions."
Priewe also says, say that despite the soft economy, this Christmas could feature more big ticket electronics. The items flying fastest off the shelves are also the most expensive.
“Our electronic department will be bombarded. Our plasma TV’s our Wii's, all the electronic items."
So shoppers who need to get an early start this year may just need to put off that after lunch nap on Thanksgiving, and sleep in on Friday morning instead.
