Today marks the 27th year of the Empty Stocking Fund a joint project between the Morning News and the Salvation Army.
For the past 26 years, the community has responded as it always does to help those less fortunate.
On this Thanksgiving Day, with all the bad news about the economy facing us, we give thanks for what we have and think about those less fortunate for whatever the reason.
With Thanksgiving coming so late in the month, the time is short between now and Christmas, not only for this charity, but also others.
There are many worthwhile efforts under way to help. We ask that you find a way to give and especially encourage you to give through a program that has done so much over the years.
The Empty Stocking Fund is looking for cash donations and gifts.
You can send your checks care of the Empty Stocking Fund, P.O. Box 4108, Florence, S.C. 29502.
Or you can leave your check at any BB&T branch in Florence.
And of course you can make a donation through the Salvation Army Christmas Kettles.
The Salvation Army also has its Adopt A Family gifts effort. Leave your gifts at their headquarters at 2210 Hoffmeyer Road by Dec. 15. The hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Already the Salvation Army has gotten assistance requests from 514 families.
This includes 1,065 children younger than 12.
And there will be at least 1,923 people assisted.
As has been the case for the past several years, the Drs. Bruce and Lee Foundation Board will make an initial $10,000 donation to the fund.
If the community raises at least $20,000 on its own, the fund will match that with another $20,000.
Residents certainly have responded to this challenge in the past, and we expect them to do so this year.
But to do so, remember the time is short. There are not that many days until Christmas arrives.
The donation form is on page 6D of today’s paper.
